I know you find it hard to believe that Gary Vaynerchuk allowed me to post this after the whole kidnapping thing, but as you can see from this video, he’s a pretty genuine guy, and as it would seem, pretty forgiving. Which brings me to my point, really, after interviewing him and watching him present at Seed Conference it was a little hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that this guy was "for real", after all, Gary has built a brand Wine Library TV around his own effervescence. Which is why I was excited to be invited by my friend Harper to have dinner with the skinnyCorp crew and Gary after the conference. It was time for: appetizers, hand made cocktails and a little investigative reporting. Actually, it was more like passive observation while drinking, but whatever. What I learned was this: This guy really really loves what he does, and is always thinking of ways to push the envelope of what’s expected. Also, he’s a marketing genius, he was giving the Threadless guys all kinds of unsolicited marketing ideas, and some of those ideas were pretty great! He very well could be the hardest working person I’ve met, but it’s hard to see the "work" because it looks like he’s goofing off! He doesn’t stop. Also, watching him interact with his brother AJ, made me feel all melty inside. These two: all love, all respect, all the time. That’s family right there, that’s what we’re all trying to achieve. His whole "loving his family most of all" – I seriously thought that this was along the lines of dedicating a book to your grandparents marketing, but, alas, again a truth. There was a moment where Gary spontaneously leaned over to AJ and gave him this very Russian kiss on the cheek…awwwwe. Anyone who thinks this guy is snowing them with this whole sunshine thing ought to just have a conversation with him, he’s just genuinely nice. Yes, he acts more than a little ADD, and YES he’s a total ham, and yes, he’s crafty, but that happens to be exactly who he truly is. My bullshit meter (they come precisely calibrated in life coaches) didn’t go off when talking to Gary, except, of course, when he was bullshitting. If it sounds like I have my first internet celebrity crush… I think it’s true. What can I say, I’m drawn to people who are passionate about being alive. What about you? What are you so passionate about you would travel for 14 days straight and work nonstop for? If you’ve got a fine tuned bullshit meter subscribe to Life In Perpetual Beta.
